Have you noticed grey wires under the top cover of your water softener that are not listed in the owner’s manual?
The grey wires you see are for the salt lid sensor that turns on the light when you open the top cover. If you are looking under the top cover of your softener, you may see the sensor on the right side of the rim or near the bottom underside of the faceplate. The sensor detects when the salt lid is shut and when it is open. A couple examples of where the light sensor may sit are below as well as instructions on how to put it back into place if needed.

or it may look like this:
If the sensor has come out of place, you should be able to easily set it back into place if you have a system that matches the first two pictures. If you need to put it back into place where it is in the bottom two pictures above, that will require a few extra steps.
- You'll need to disconnect the control board wiring to separate it from the unit.
- Then you'll need to disconnect the faceplate (part with the display/buttons) from the top cover. You may need a tool to do this to get some leverage and it may be difficult to remove it. We suggest being as careful as possible but you will need to use some force to separate it.
- Once separated, you can put the light sensor into place and then put everything back together.
