Do you need to replace the valve cover on your water softener? We're here to help you through it! Let's get started!
Click each step below to expand directions.
Step 1 - Disassembling the Softener
1. First, you'll need to bypass the water softener by pushing the handle IN on the back of your unit. This will stop water from coming in or out of the softener while you work:
2. Go ahead and unplug your softener from the outlet.
3. Remove the top cover. If you need additional help, click here.
4. Now, you'll want to look on the underside of the top cover. On the backside of the display screen you'll see a control board that houses the wire connections.
If you have a plastic cover
Squeeze both sides of the shell to remove cover.
5. Follow the black and red Motor wires to a clear/white plastic connection and unclip.
6. Then remove the Wire Harness connector from the back of the board.
7. If you have a tank light on your unit (see photo above), follow those wires and pull the tank light up and out of the plastic rim. Place the whole top cover to the side while you work.
8. Locate the valve head. Go ahead and remove the yellow screws outlined below. This will free the Motor, Motor Plate or Cover, and Switchbox.
9. Pull the geared cam off the valve cover.
10. Now you'll remove the 6-8 screws on the outside perimeter of the valve (in green below). Then, remove the valve cover and set to the side.
Step 2 - Reassembling the Softener
1. Go ahead and grab your new valve cover and place it on top of the open valve. You can secure it with the 6-8 screws.
2. Take your geared cam and place it onto the valve head. You'll notice that the center hole of the cam will fit perfectly onto the gray rotor stem sticking up through the valve cover. Push the cam onto the rotor stem until it's snug.
3. You'll see there are different letters printed on top of the cam - these represent the different valve positions. You’ll want to spin the gear (will be hard to turn), so that the Service ‘S’ mark is showing through the peep hole in the motor plate or cover once it's reattached.
4. You're ready to reattach the Switchbox, followed by the Motor Plate or Cover, and then Motor on top to complete the valve. Secure them with the screws you removed earlier.
5. Bring your top cover back over to the softener. Reconnect the thick red and black motor wires to the clear/white clip.
6. You'll plug the red wire harness connector back onto the control board. Make sure to push it on all the way. The bottom of the red connector should be flush with the white plastic on the control board.
7. If applicable:
- Reinstall the tank light bulb.
- Snap the cover back on the control board.
8. You're ready to plug the power supply back into the outlet. You may hear the motor start to turn. After a few seconds, it should click into it's home position.
9. Go ahead and pull the bypass handle back OUT to allow water flow again.
10. Lastly, you're going to want to check for leaks over the next few hours. Once you've confirmed there's no leaking you can put your top cover back on. You're done!
