If you need to replace your salt tank, you've made it to the right place. Your salt tank is the largest part on your softener and there are multiple steps to getting this done. Let's go through this together!
Tools Needed: Pliers (optional)
Click each step below to expand.
Step 1 - Clean Your Salt Tank
1. First, you'll need to remove any salt from your tank. If the salt is dry and still in full pellet/crystal form, you can store and reuse for later. Any wet, solidified, or broken-down salt should be discarded.
2. Use a wet/dry vac or container to remove any remaining water from your salt tank.
Step 2 - Depressurize & Disassemble the Tank
1. Go ahead and turn the main water off in your home and open a nearby softened water faucet to relieve pressure in your plumbing.
2. Unplug the softener’s power cord from the outlet.
3. Bypass the water softener by pushing the handle IN on the back of your unit. This will stop water from coming in or out of the softener while you work.
4. We're going to need to transfer the Brinewell (pictured below) over to the new tank.
5. Take the lid off the brinewell. Pull up on the black hose, bringing the float assembly all the way up and out of the well. Set the float assembly in the tank while you transfer the brinewell.
6. Unscrew the wingnut from the screw inside your brinewell. Remove the brinewell from the salt tank.
7. Place the brinewell into the new salt tank and secure to the side of the tank with the wingnut and screw. It should rest on the bottom of the salt tank.
8. Go ahead and remove the top cover. If you need additional instructions, click here.
Step 3 - Disconnect the Softener
1. Disconnect the electronic connections from the top of the softener.
- Motor – unplug thick black and red wires at clear plastic connection piece.
- Switch – unplug the white plastic connector at end of the orange and green wires.
- Wire Harness – unclip harness from around the outlet port. The harness has a white, black, and red wire attached to it.
2. Now you can set your top cover and salt lid aside.
3. Remove the black C-clips from the softener/bypass connection. Pull one side of the black plastic C-clip away from the softener, and slowly roll it towards the other side to remove.
Note: If the clips seem stuck, slowly and gently rock the softener back and forth slightly while applying pressure to the clip as described above to free them.
4. Once those are off you can pull the softener away from the bypass assembly.
5. Go ahead and disconnect the Drain hose by releasing the black clip on the right-hand side of the head by pulling it up and out.
6. Now, you'll disconnect the Brine hose from the Venturi (white cone piece). Identify yours below.
- If you have a white nut attached to the Venturi: unscrew the nut by twisting it counter-clockwise and pull the hose off.
- If your hose doesn't have that white nut, you'll need to push the small collet piece in and pull the hose out at the same time to remove.
7. Remove the large white clamps from the tank neck by unhooking the retainer clips that hold them together.
8. With both hands on the valve head, wiggle it side to side as you pull it up and off. Carefully set it to the side.
9. Take a look at the position of the riser tube O-ring. It should sit about ¼ inch down from the top of the central riser tube. Fix it if needed.
10. Remove the rim/tray by unsnapping it from the tank. The float assembly and hose will still be attached to the rim. Set these to the side.
11. You'll need to pull the Resin Tank up and out now. Set it to the side. Be careful to keep the tank standing vertically.
12. Now you need to move the salt tank away from the bypass, so we can assemble the new tank.
Step 4 - Assemble Your New Tank
1. Move your new salt tank into position in front of the bypass assembly.
2. Go ahead and place the resin tank into your new salt tank. You want to position it so it stands straight up and down and doesn't rest at an angle.
3. Locate the rim and float assembly. Place the float assembly in the brinewell, and snap the rim onto the new tank. This will secure the neck of the resin tank.
4. Check the brinewell to confirm the float assembly is resting on the bottom, and the black hose is sitting in the notch in the top of the well. Place the lid back on the well.
5. Move your valve head back onto the riser tube, and push down until it rests on the neck of the resin tank.
6.Put the white tank clamps back on and and secure them with the clip.
7. Reconnect the softener to the bypass assembly and attach the black C-clips.
8. Reattach the brine hose to the venturi.
- Either screw the white nut back on by twisting it clock-wise (use a pliers to twist it carefully back on tightly):
- Or insert the hose into the collet. You'll need to make sure to push it in until it you notice some resistance. Then push it in a little further. The hose should be in about 5/8 of an inch.
9. Reattach the main drain hose/elbow onto the right side of the head.
10. Grab the top cover and position it to the back/side of your softener so we can reattach the wire connections:
- Wire Harness - attach around the Outlet port. This will only secure properly one way.
- Switch - connect onto the prong - there should be one exposed terminal/prong.
- Motor - connect at the plastic piece.
11. Turn the main water supply to the home back on.
12. Pull the bypass handle back OUT to allow water flow again and watch for any leaks.
13. Plug the power supply back into the outlet.
Step 5 - Test for Leaks
We're almost done! Time to run a manual advance check.
1. Hold the Recharge button down until you hear the motor turn on, then let go. You'll see ‘Recharge Now’ or ‘Recharging’ flashing on the screen.
2. Press the Recharge button once to advance to the next cycle. Repeat this each time the motor stops until the flashing recharge indicator on the screen disappears. You'll want to check for leaks around the valve head each time the motor stops running.
3. Last step! Put the top cover and salt lid back on your unit and you're good to go!
