If the buttons don't seem to work on your unit when you press them, just follow this guide for some easy troubleshooting steps. Keep reading and let's get started!
Click each step below for directions.
Step 1 - Checking the Wiring & Display Screen
First, make sure your softener is plugged into a working electrical outlet and its display screen is working and on. If your screen is blank and nothing is on it, that's a different issue. Click here for troubleshooting that.
Step 2 - Removing the Top Cover
Next, we'll need to get access to the control board from the top cover.
1. On the back of the unit, the cover is attached with some small tabs/clips. You'll need to grab hold of that area (pictured below) and pull the cover out from the tabs and then away from the system.
2. There are 2 similar small tabs/clips holding the front of the cover on as well. Feel free to flip the cover over and set it on top of the front area of the unit so you can have access to the control board. Be careful not to disconnect any wires in this process. It's also normal for the plastic cover to make some noise as your moving it.
Step 3 - Accessing the Control Board
Now we'll need to find the electronic control board on the inside of the cover. If your control board is hidden by a plastic shell, squeeze both sides of the shell to remove it.

Step 4 - Removing the Control Board
The control board is attached to the top cover by plastic tabs on each corner. You'll notice on one side the tabs are tapered and have a longer edge. You want to pry the tapered tabs away from the board to free it (like pictured below).
Step 5 - Checking the Buttons
While holding the control board in your hand, press the colored prongs that correspond to each button (pictured below). Feel free to wiggle the prongs and repeatedly push them at different angles to see if they respond.
Are the buttons responding?
- YES - If the button prongs respond, the control board may not have been seated tightly against the back of the faceplate. Reinstall the board, making sure all four corners are snapped all the way in place. Reattach the top cover.
- NO - If the buttons still do not respond, or if the control board is damaged, we recommend replacing the board. You can click here to purchase replacement parts, or check out our article What is My Warranty to see if your product is still under warranty.
